" Collaborating to reduce the burden of sickle cell disease  globally "

   Information

The 2nd Global Congress on Sickle Cell Disease will be held in Rio de Janeiro, at Windsor Guanabara Hotel located in downtown Rio. Downtown Rio has many historic buildings dating back to the founding of the city. Downtown’s architecture reflects the colonial period when the Portuguese Royal family and its Court lived in Brazil.

In addition to its historic architecture, downtown houses the commercial center of the city, with the largest concentration of financial and office buildings. A perfect fusion of the old and modern can be appreciated in its historical buildings and modern skyscrapers.

Downtown was the scene of some of the most important decisions and events in the history of the country. Places like the Imperial Palace, where D. Pedro I was consecrated emperor, the Fiscal Island, the Quinta da Boa Vista and the Church of Our Lady of Glory were scenarios of events that marked important moments of the imperial short period until the proclamation of the Republic in 1889. Architectural Remnants of this past persist to this day and are now major tourist attractions.
